Florian Hoefner
JUNO Award-winning pianist and composer, Florian Hoefner, draws from a myriad of influences that culminate in his unique brand of contemporary music. Praised as a “composer-bandleader of insightful resolve” by the New York Times and a “harmonically daring pianist … reaching toward new sonic territory” by Downbeat, Florian Hoefner has carved a reputation as an inventive creator and performer of genre-defying modern music.
Originally trained as a jazz pianist, he has released 6 albums under his own name and many more as a collaborator. “Desert Bloom,” the second album with his trio with Andrew Downing and Nick Fraser won a 2023 JUNO Award for Jazz Album of the Year and was nominated for 2 East Coast Music Awards. As a composer, Hoefner is active both in the jazz and contemporary classical worlds. In early 2024, the “Iris Trio” released a critically acclaimed album of his chamber works entitled “Project Earth: The Blue Chapter”. In October 2025, he premiered his original project, “The Way of Water” for chamber orchestra and jazz quartet, co-lead with saxophonist and composer, Quinsin Nachoff, at the Off Jazz Festival in Montréal. His compositions have been performed internationally, including by the New York Jazz Orchestra and the Lucerne Jazz Orchestra.
